Upshaw MVP;
Silver Second Team AUS All Star
Christian
Upshaw has been named the AUS MVP for the
second straight year. Upshaw was third
in the league in scoring and led the
conference in assists. Will Silver had
an outstanding year for the X-Men, running
the point effectively, playing great defense
and supplying offence when required.
Silver finished second in the league in
steals and assists and was fifth in field
goal percentage. Rookie Jordan Clarke
capped an impressive debut season by being
named to the all rookie team.
Interestingly, the entire AUS first all star
team is made up of guards. Upshaw is
joined on the first team by MacLaughlin and
Haywood of SMU, Dorsey from CBU and Farine
from Dal. |

X Drops Season
Finale to SMU
The X-Men
struggled to contain the long distance game

the have the second seed in the AUS tourney
this coming weekend. The net result:

X Downs CBU in
a Classic (Feb 26)
T-Bear
Upshaw was the star, but Riiny Ngot was the
difference in the game as X won a thriller
over CBU at the OC 81-80 (view
webcast). Neither team
looked good early in the contest - CBU led
by a score of 5-3 after five minutes then
17-14 after one quarter as both teams
struggled offensively. The teams
traded baskets in the second quarter and CBU
clung to a slim 3 point margin at the half,
39-36. The Capers opened a lead of 9
points midway through the third, and it
looked for a time like they might run away
with the game. When Alberto Rodriguez
picked up his fourth foul, Coach K turned to
Riiny Ngot to give the team a lift on the
defensive end. He delivered.
With Ngot in the lineup, X ratcheted up its
defensive intensity, and the Capers looked
out of synch offensively. Ngot racked up 4
blocked in 11 minutes, firing up his
teammates and the big OC crowd. X
started to chip away at the CBU lead, and
started the fourth quarter down 5, (64-59).
Behind huge buckets by Upshaw and Chad
Warren, X traded the lead with CBU until the
last couple of minutes. The Capers were down
4 (81-77) with 32 seconds remaining and
newcomer Paris Carter hit a clutch three to
bring the score to 81-80. The X-Men
could not get a quality shot on their final
possession and CBU got the
ball back with 18 seconds remaining.
with 8 ticks on the clock, Carter fired up a
three pointer. The ball went out of bounds -
possession CBU - with 5 seconds to go.
The Capers got the ball back to Carter, who
had an open look, but just missed a three.
After a scramble, the
final buzzer sounded - X wins. Upshaw
led the way with 33 points, many coming down
the stretch. Charlie Spurr added 15
and Chad Warren 13 and 9 rebounds.
Riiny Ngot finished the game with 6 boards
and 4 blocks. James Dorsey and Phil
Nkrumah paced CBU with 18 and 17
respectively. X had a slight edge on
the boards (42-41). for the game, X
shot 40% (48% from 3 point range) while
holding the Capers to 36% (22% from 3).
X plays its final regular season game at
home on Friday Mar 5 vs. SMU. A win
gives X the #1 seed in the AUS tourney.

X runs record
to 17-1 with win over MUN (Feb 21)
X downed
the Memorial Seahawks on Sunday by a score
of 91-76 in a contest that could charitably
called ugly. It was characterized by a
combined 40 turnovers between the two teams.
The first quarter was competitive with
several lead changes and X held a slim 23-22
lead after 10 minutes. X opened the
gap to 16 points at the half (54-38) and
maintained a 10+ point lead throughout the
second half. T Bear Upshaw led X with
23 points and 9 assists, while Jeremy Dunn
contributed 15 and Will Silver 13.
Mark Woodland paced the visitors with 20.
X out rebounded Memorial by a 43-32 margin.

Clarke and Dunn
key win over Seahawks (Feb 20)
Jeremy
Dunn had a 15 point, 11 rebound
double-double and rookie Jordan Clarke
chipped in 13 points to lead X to an easy
82-48 win over the Memorial Seahawks.
This game was never really in doubt after X
ran out to a 16 point first quarter lead,
which the Seahawks trimmed to 9 by the end
of the quarter. X led at the half
44-29. The third quarter was all X as
they held memorial to only 7 points and
extended their lead to 25+ to for the rest
of the game. Will Donkoh had a strong
game with 10 points. After sitting out
the last few games with a couple of nagging
injuries, rookie Riiny Ngot played well.
Ngot showed flashes of what he will be able
to do for the team when he gets healthy - he
had 3 blocks and 6 boards (3 offensive) in
10 minutes of action. Jason Shepherd
led the Seahawks with 15 points. X won
the battle of the boards 41-29.
However the team committed 18 TOs - there is
room for improvement there. X and
Memorial play again Sunday at 3 - this game
will be webcast live. |

X drops first
conference game to CBU (Feb 17)
In what
Coach Konchalski described as a terrific
atmosphere for a CIS game (sold out gym,
enthusiastic crowd) the X-Men dropped their
first conference game of the season 85-82 to
CBU in Sydney. The blue and white
trailed for all of the first half and a good
portion of the second half before a 13-0 run
in the 4th quarter propelled them to a 6
point lead (69-63) with 5 minutes to play.
Not to be outdone, CBU went on their own run
to take a 80-73 lead with 2 minutes to play.
X tried to claw back with three pointers
from Christian Upshaw, Charlie Spurr and
Will Silver to close the gap to one point,
on a couple of occasions the last being at
83-82. X got the final possession with
7.7 seconds to play, but were unable to
manufacture a quality shot to force OT.
T-Bear Upshaw led the way for X with 21
points (but also 8 TOs) Jeremy Dunn had one
of the best games of his career with 20
points, 6 tough boards and some very good D
on Phil Nkrumah. Newcomer Paris Carter
led the Capers with 22 points, and was
instrumental in the win with 10+ points (and
at least 5 free throws without a miss)
coming down the stretch. X did a good
job taking away transition opportunities
from the Capers, but lost the battle of the
boards 41-31 and gave up 16 offensive
rebounds. X also committed 21 TOs.
For the game X shot 45% and held the Capers
to 40%. These teams tangle at the OC
on Feb 26 at 7PM. |

X-Men down Dal
84-64 (Feb 7)
After a
close first quarter, the X-Men rode some hot
three point shooting and outstanding full
court D to a solid 84-64 win over the Dal
Tigers. X held a slim 3 point edge over the
Tigers (19-16) after 1, but doubled up the
Tigers (24-12) in the second to open up a 15
point half time lead. X started the
third with defensive intensity ratcheted up
to 11 and Dal was never able to mount a
serious challenge. X was led by 17
points and 8 assists from T=Bear Upshaw.
He got plenty of support = Jeremy Dunn added
16 points (7-12) and Chad Warren was
excellent off the bench (15 points, 6-7 and
3-4 from 3 point range). Alberto
Rodriguez add 11 points and 3 blocks.
Simon Farine led Dal with 29 points.
Dal won the battle of the boards 36-26, but
X held Dal to just 36% shooting. X was
outstanding from 3 point range (50% - 13-26)
and shot 53% overall. X also protected
the ball well with only 9 turnovers (1 in
the first half) while forcing 16 Tiger TOs.

Dunn and Warren lead X over UNB (Jan 30)
Chad
Warren and Jeremy Dunn scored 18 points
apiece to lead the X-Men to a 95-78 (4
point) win over the UNB Varsity Reds.
The V Reds (1-11) gave the blue and white
all they could handle in the first half.
UNB played some good D and moved the ball
well. X led by one at the quarter (19-18)
and at the half (40-39). A scoring
(29-17) barrage (off some terrific team
passing) in the third quarter gave X some
breathing room. Both Warren (6-7, 3-4
threes) and Dunn (7-9) were very efficient
offensively. Player of the game
Terrence Taylor chipped in 11 points. Wil
Silver and Christian Upshaw (3 and 10 points
respectively) were quiet offensively but
combined for 19 assists (but also 13 TOs).
Rookie Jordan Clarke added 10 points. UNB
was led by Michael Anderson's 17 points.
For the game, X shot 58% and won the battle
of the boards 31-23. X plays next at
