Two player who have been a
huge part of the X program over the last several years
played their last game at the Oland Centre last night.
Garry Gallimore and Neil MacDonald finished their
careers in Antigonish in the best way possible - with a
terrific 82-78 win over their arch-rivals the CBU
Capers. Gallimore and MacDonald were instrumental
in the win. Gallimore had another terrific offensive
performance (19 points and 4 assists) to go with his
usual stifling defense. Neil MacDonald continued his
stellar season with a 19 point, 7 rebound, 5 assist, 4
block and 2 steal performance.
Although this was a
"meaningless" game for both teams, it was played with
playoff intensity from the opening whistle. The
Capers had the edge early going up by a 14-8 score about
4 minutes into the contest. The X-Men battled back
behind Neil MacDonald and Tyler Richards (14 first half
points). Richards scored 6 consecutive points to
give the X-Men their largest lead of the half, 31-22.
The Capers have lots of weapons and made their expected
run to close the gap to 5 points (42-37) at the half.
The second half had the
X-Men lead by a very small margin most of the way.
They managed to get some separation (6-8 points) on
several occasions but the Capers came back to keep it
close. X led by 8 points with under three to play,
but the Capers made a run to tie things up with just
over a minute remaining. With 25 seconds to play,
rookie Terrance Taylor was fouled going to the hoop.
After being iced twice by CBU coach Jim Charters, Taylor
calmly sank his charity tosses to give the X-Men an
78-76 lead. The Capers were able to convert on
only one of their their last two possessions and Dwayne Johnson scored on
two foul shots and a layup
against CBU's full court pressure to seal the victory.
Along with Gallimore and
MacDonald, Tyler Richards also had a strong game with 16
points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Richards has
done a great job running the offence while Christian
'T-Bear' Upshaw recovers from an ankle injury.
Both Upshaw and Dave Joyce (ankle) saw playing time
against the Capers and should be close to 100% for the
AUS tournament. Terrance Taylor had a strong
offensive game with 12 points. Jarrett Timmons led
the Capers with a 20 point and 10 rebound performance.
X plays next on Friday
March 9th in the AUS semi-finals (8PM) at the Metro
Centre.
