X gets big win over PEI

Join the booster club!

X struggled at times, but ultimately came away with a 80-68 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers at the Oland Centre.  The win was an important confidence builder for a team that had lost 5 or its previous 7 games, including a loss to the Panthers in Charlottetown last weekend.

The teams stayed close and traded leads throughout the first half.  PEI's offense basically consisted of Doug McKinney, who scored from both inside and from beyond the arch.  Unfortunately for McKinney and PEI, he seemed battle illness during the game and played only 25 minutes.   Former All Canadian Sherone Edwards was not a factor after picking up 2 early fouls and then two quick fouls midway through the second half as he battled with rookie Terrance Taylor.  X' man to man defense had no answer for McKinney so coach K switched things up and move to zone defense and had the X-Men apply full court pressure (resulting in 21 PEI turnovers in the contest).  These tactics turned the game in the X-Men's favour and they were able to take a 5 point lead at the half.

The teams traded buckets early in the second, but the X-Men began to slowly pull away, led by some timely 3s by Garry Gallimore and the inside game of Neil MacDonald.  With about 10 to play, X led by 8.  At this point, coach K called a time out - probably to remind the team that this was the point in the game where they have struggled recently.  The blue and white have held significant leads in several of the contests they've lost, only to lose focus, and ultimately the games.  The time out seemed to do the trick, the X-Men cruised to the win.

X was led by 6' 10" Neil MacDonald, who in his 5th year is playing by far the best and most consistent basketball of his career.  MacDonald had yet another double double (19 point and 13 boards).  Garry Gallimore sparked the X-Men with 18 points (including 3 second half "3s" to help the X-Men pull away) and 3 steals.  Christian Upshaw effectively ran the offence (8 assists and only 2 TOs) while scoring 16 points of his own.  Tyler Richards showed strong signs that he is coming out of the offensive slump he has been in lately with 18 points.  Rookie Alberto Rodriguez showed a glimpse of what we can expect from him over the next few years, coming into the game and scoring a bucket and collecting 2 offensive rebounds in just 4 minutes of action.   Doug McKinney led PEI with 16 points.

X plays the Acadia Axemen (coming off an 84-54 drubbing at the hands of CBU) today at 3PM in a key match up. This game will be web cast live.
