In game that
the X-Men led from the opening minute, the Blue and
White dropped a decision to visiting St Mary's Huskies
by a score of 77-74. The X-Men made it look easy
in the early going scoring in bunches in transition and
building leads into the low double digits. X led
all the way in the first half, although SMU was able to
get close on a couple occasions. X had a mini run
to end the first half to build a 8 point lead at the
half, 37-29.
X started the second half
strongly and built leads of 12-14 points. However,
the Huskies got hot from three point range, led by
former Acadia Axeman Clint Bateman (20 points) who
got a number of open looks and converted on 3 '3s' in
the second half. At the same time, X became
listless offensively and committed numerous turnovers.
With about 3 minutes to play, SMU tied things up.
X had its chances to win the game, but with 25 seconds
left and X down one, X forced a pass inside to a double
teamed Neil MacDonald (who carried the X-Men offensively
all night) which resulted in a turnover. X
subsequently fouled Mark Ross, who sank 2 free throws to
put the Huskies up 3 with 7 seconds to play. A
last second '3' attempt by Tyler Richards came up short
and the visitors took the 'W'.
Neil MacDonald led X with 23
points, 10 rebounds and a block. Garry Gallimore
had 15 while Tyler Richards had a quiet 12 to go
with 6 assists. Dwayne Johnson was effective as a
starter and chipped in 10 points, 5 boards and 3 steals.
X plays next back at Acadia on Jan 26 at 8PM. This
contest was web cast live - the archived game will be
available from the web site within the next couple of
days.
