A furious X-Men come back late
in the second half fell just a little short and X
dropped a 71-66 decision to the CBU Capers. Cape
Breton led for a good portion of the first half,
building leads of up to 8 points. X was ice cold in the
half, shooting at a 35% (12-31) clip. X made a
little run to end the half to close the gap to 4 points,
35-31.
X came out firing early in
the second and managed to take a 1 point lead on a
Christian Upshaw three pointer. At this point, the
wheels came completely off and the Capers went on a 20-0
run fueled by some unconscious shooting on their part
and a number of X turnovers.
Coach Konchalski called on
his bench to provide a boost, and they did. Dave
Joyce and Will Silver entered the game and were
instrumental as the X-Men began to chip away at the lead
and get the crowd back in the game. Dave Joyce hit
a big three, and Silver hit a runner in the lane to
bring the blue and white to within 5 points with a
couple of minutes to play. Silver also contributed
some exceptional 'D' on CBU point guard Ryan Keliher,
making him expend a lot of energy to advance the ball up
the court. On this night, the X-Men dug themselves
too deep a hole and could not complete the comeback.
Neil MacDonald continued
his exceptional play in the second half of the season
with 16 points, 9 boards and 6 blocks. Tyler
Richards, suffering some severe effects of the flu,
added 15 mainly in the second half. Garry
Gallimore added 14 and Christian Upshaw 10. Eric
Breland led the Capers with 20 points.
For the game, Capers shot
46% vs. 36% for X. X managed to out rebound the
bigger CBU squad by a 37-31 margin.
The Blue and White X-Press
want to congratulate Coach Brent Baker and the X-Women
on their huge 82-81 OT victory over the CBU women's
team. The X-Women have run off 4 straight
victories (three in league play).
