X battled hard, but ultimately fell victim to the hot 3
point shooting of CBU's Paul Blake as they dropped a
86-80 decision to the CBU Capers tonight in Sydney in
front of a packed house. The two teams circled each
other like heavyweight boxers in the early going, with
no team gaining home than a 5 point advantage. The
Capers opened a 25-20 lead with 11:47 to go on back to
back 3 pointers by Paul Blake.
The tide turned for X in the first half when Neil
MacDonald hit a bucket and came back to grab a tough
defensive rebound which he outlet to streaking Christian
Upshaw as he fell to the court. Upshaw converted
the layup and was fouled. After his free throw,
the score was 31-29 X with 4:25 to play. X
extended its lead to 42-35 when Terrance Taylor made a
tough bucket and was fouled with no time remaining on
the clock.
The X-Men started slowly in the second half, while the
Capers started to heat up. Paul Blake sank 3 NBA
length 3 pointers to put CBU up by 11 60-49 with 12:21
to play. The Capers proceeded to extend their lead
to up to 16 points 67-51 with 9:22 to play. From
this point, it was X' turn to chip away at the Caper
lead. A Gallimore dunk with 5:32 to play brought X
to within 8, 72-64. With 2:25 to play, a Tyler
Richards 3 pointer got X back to with 6, 77-71. X
was able to get within 5 points, but no closer, and CBU
came away with a 86-80 win.
The big three for X led the way in this contest, with
Tyler Richards leading all scorers with 26 points and 5
rebounds. Garry Gallimore added 17 points and 4
boards. Neil MacDonald added 10 points, 5 rebounds
and 2 blocks. Blake led CBU with 25 points, while
Ryan Keliher added 23. For the game, X was outrebounded
by a narrow 39-38 margin. For the game X shot
43.8% while the Capers shot 45.9%. X was ice cold
from 3 point range, going 2-14.
X plays next at home vs. an improved Dalhousie squad on
Friday Nov 24.
