The 1400 fans at last
evening's contest at the Oland Centre were treated to a
pre-season game that had the intensity of a playoff game
as X hosted arch-rival Cape Breton Capers in the final
of the Pizza Delight/Nike Invitational. The X-Men
came away with a 78-75 victory in what turned out to be
a barn burner. The teams traded leads in the early
going, but CBU carried the edge in play in the latter
part of the half and took a 44-32 lead to the locker
room.
Garry Gallimore and
Tyler Richards led a furious charge to start the second
half as X scored the first 10 points to close to within
2, 44-42 about 5 minutes in. The game was tight,
but X built an eight point lead with a few minutes to
play. The Capers chipped away. and got to within 3
with 4 seconds remaining. The Capers attempted a 3
on their last possession but came away empty.
X was led by Tyler
Richards (27 points, 9-16 shooting) and Garry Gallimore
(16 points, 6 boards). Neil MacDonald made his
presence felt with 9 points and 5 blocks. Rookie
Terrence Taylor played very well and contributed 9
points (including a big '3' to get the X comeback
started in the second half) and 5 boards in 20 minutes.
Christian Upshaw distributed 6 assists. The Capers
were led by Blake (27 points) and Breland (15 points, 13
rebounds).
For the game, the
X-Men shot 53% but were outrebounded by the larger
Caper squad 34-23.
