St FX's 'big three' of veterans led the way in a 74-69
season opening win over the UPEI Panthers in the first
round of the Mickey Place tournament in Charlottetown.
Garry Gallimore led the blue and white with 18 points
while Tyler Richards contributed 15 and Neil Macdonald
14 and 5 rebounds. This was very much an up and
down contest for the X-Men. They led by as many as
14 points in the first half, but allowed the Panthers
back in and held only a 3 point cushion at the half,
34-31. The second half was a back and forth
affair, and the X-Men found themselves down by 7 with
about 5 minutes to play. Rookie Christian Upshaw
(13 points and 3 assists) showed glimpses of what his
future holds by scoring several buckets in transition to
seal the win for the X-Men. Terrence Taylor made
his presence felt in his first CIS game with 8 points
and 3 rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Newcomer Dwayne
Johnson also played a key role in this contest by
playing some very tough defense on the Panther's star Sherone Edwards (19 points).
For the game, X shot 58% from the field. The story
for UPEI was their 3 point shooting - 70% for the game
on 11 for 15 shooting. Acadia transfer Jared Budd was 4-4
from 3 point range and scored 17 for the Panthers.
