X-Men stumble at UPEI After reeling off 10 straight wins in the
AUBC regular season, the X-Men suffered their first loss of the season at
UPEI on Sunday, 72-64. Sunday was a day of upsets in the AUS - X'
chief rival in this season, UCCB, was upset at UNB, St. Mary's lost at
home to Memorial and Dalhousie beat up on Acadia.
X started the contest strong, playing some
great D and jumped out to an early 22 - 11 lead. UPEI made an adjustment
in the first half and threw a zone defence at the X-Men.
Unfortunately, X' shooting touch went cold against the zone and the
Panthers climbed back into the game and took a 2 point lead to the locker
room at the half. The contest was a back and forth affair through
the first 10-12 minutes of the second half. However, the Panthers
took control in the last 7 - 8 minutes and X was not able to respond.
4 X-Men reached double figures - Gary Gallimore (14), Zach Russell (11) Jon Bell (11) and Alex Stephens (10).
Stephens was the top rebounder for X with 8. The X-Men were without rookie
standout Tyler Richards who sustained an ankle sprain in practice late
last week and, uncharacteristically, did not get good production from
its usually reliable bench.
The X-Men shot a good 50%
from the field for the game vs. 47% for UPEI. However, the X-Men
attempted 16 fewer shots than UPEI and committed 19 turnovers. The X-Men will have an opportunity to exact
revenge on the Panthers, who visit Antigonish for 2 games this upcoming
weekend. On Saturday, the teams meet at 4PM and on Sunday, 3PM.
