X advances to AUS final and CIS tourney

Gary Gallimore likes to play at the Metro Centre, which is good news for X basketball fans.  Player of the game Gallimore led the X-Men to a convincing 96-75 win over the UNB Varsity Reds tonight in the AUS tournament semi-final.  Gallimore contributed perhaps his best offensive game of this season with 18 points on 7 of 8 field goals (including 4 of 4 3 pointers).  He also dished out 4 assists.  Neil MacDonald and Zach Russell contributed 17 points apiece.  MacDonald also kicked in 9 boards and Russell 5 assists and 3 steals.  Jon Bell played his usual high octane game and had 14 points.  Dan Goggin led UNB with 14 points. 

X came out of the gate strong and quickly built a 13-3 lead.  The Varsity Reds came back to tie the score at 15 about 10 minutes in.  X regained its lead right away with a pair of Gallimore 3 pointers and took a 9 point margin to the locker room.  The second half started out looking like it would be a battle  as the VReds closed to within 6 points about 5 minutes in.  A couple of Jon Bell slashes to the hoop put X up by 10, and X started to cruise, building and maintaining a 20 point margin. 

The X-Men seem pretty comfortable at the Metro Centre.  For the game, the team shot almost 59% from the field while holding the VReds to 44%. 

In the second semi-final, the CBU Capers were upset by the St Mary's Huskies 58-54.  The Huskies got strong perforances from Goodman (14 points, 12 rebounds), Carvery (16 points), Thibault (14 points) and Cole (10 points and 6 assists).  Player of the game Eric Breland contributed 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Capers. 

Tomorrow's AUS final goes at 7PM Atlantic and will be broadcast and webcast by Eastlink.
