X-Men top VReds in
Fredericton The X-Men completed a
successful weekend road trip by downing the UNB Varsity Reds 101-90 in
Fredericton. The Blue and White started the trip with a 86-80 win
over UPEI.
The X-Men played a solid first half, shooting
the ball very well, and took 43-34 lead to the locker room at the half. The second half was a
track meet with X outscoring UNB by a bucket, 58-56. X was in
control for the entire half, building leads of up to 19 points. With
about 3 minutes to play, UNB coach Tom Gillespie employed an intentional
foul strategy to try to take the X-Men out of their game.
Gillespie's strategy backfired as the X-Men were able to keep their
composure and hit 16-18 free throws down the stretch. For the game, the Varsity
Reds committed a whopping 37 personal fouls (to 23 for X) sending the
X-Men to the foul line an incredible 58 times (converting 44
attempts).
X spread the wealth on offense, with Neil
MacDonald and Zach Russell leading the way with 18 points. Garry
Gallimore added 16 and Mike Baxter had 14 points and a game-high 7 boards.
Ed Reynolds, who started the game, had a solid outing with 11 points and 5
rebounds.
X shot the ball well, converting on 28 of 48
attempts (58%). Unlike the
previous night vs. PEI, when X shot 52% from 3 point range, the X-Men converted only
1 of 10 3 point attempts against the VReds. X out-rebounded UNB 35-23. For UNB, 3
players accounted for 82 of 90 points. Tom Spink had 31, Dan Goggin
28 and Dan Thomson 23.
