X-Men fall to
Capers
The X-Men suffered their first lopsided loss
of the season, falling to the UCCB Capers last night in Sydney by a score
of 93-71. The final score was not indicative of the flow of the
game. In first half, the teams were fairly even, and the X-Men went
to the locker room down three points. In the second half, the X-Men
started strong and held leads of up to 5 points until there were about
8 minutes remaining in the half. At this point, the Capers caught
fire and hit shots from all over the court, igniting the large crowd, and
the blue and white lost its composure and turned the ball over on numerous
occasions.
The Capers were led by the hot hand of
reserve guard Cory Hargrove, who
had 26 points in 24 minutes of play and Anthony Breland with 23. Alex Stephen had a breakout offensive game for the
X-Men, dropping 25 points on 11 of 14 shooting and collecting 9 rebounds. This was Alex'
career high in points for the X-Men. Jon Bell added 16
and Gary Gallimore 14. Zach Russell contributed 9 assists (but also 9
turnovers, unfortunately) and Neil MacDonald grabbed a game-high 11
rebounds. The X-Men missed the presence of rookie Tyler Richards
who, contrary to the stat sheet, did not play in the game.
The stats for this game are interesting in
that the X-Men shot 50% and out-rebounded the Capers by a 40-34 margin.
However the story for the X-Men was turnovers. The X-Men committed
a season high 26 to only 7 for the Capers. As well, the blue and white attempted a
whopping 21 fewer shots than Cape Breton for the game.
The road does not get easier for X as they
next travel to UNB for a game against the physical Varsity Reds on
Saturday, Feb 19th at 8PM. A win for the X-Men will guarantee a first
round bye in the AUS playoffs.
