X stays perfect with win
over Capers In a game described by one spectator as a 'barnburner', the blue and white won yet another thriller over the UCCB Capers, 79- 73. Tonight's game at the Oland Centre was an emotionally charged affair played in front of one the largest and most enthusiastic crowds in recent memory. The game was characterized by huge swings in momentum. The Breland family (Eric and Anthony) came out strong and led the Capers to an early 10 - 2 lead. The X-Men chipped away and eventually took charge in the half led by Neil MacDonald's 13 first half points. At the half, X was in control with a 45-34 cushion. It was the blue and white who came out firing in the second half. Led by an energetic Jon Bell, the X-Men built a 17 point lead 4 and 1/2 minutes into the half. Now it was the Capers turn to chip away. Playing some high-intensity defense, and aided by some X miscues, the Capers gradually closed on the X-Men until they managed to tie the game at 62 with 7 minutes to play. The Capers managed to gain a 1 point lead shortly after. Now it was X' turn to crank up the defensive intensity and they were able to regain a small lead. With under 3 minutes to play, a big 3-pointer by Zach Russell, a bucket by Tyler Richards (after a goal-tending call on Eric Breland) and some clutch free throws by Mike Baxter gave X some separation and the victory. Neil MacDonald was the offensive star for X, filling up the stat sheet with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 assists. As mentioned, MacDonald was dominant in the first half, hitting from inside and out. Mike Baxter had another strong outing with 14 points. Ed Reynolds and Zach Russell also hit double figures with 11 and 10 respectively. Russell also contributed 4 assists, 3 steals and great D on Caper point guards. A game Gary Gallimore, who was suffering a severe bout of the flu, chipped in 9 points and his usual tough defense. The Capers were led by Anthony Breland's 18 points. This was a highly entertaining game for everyone in attendance (except for the Capers small, but vocal cohort of supporters). Many thanks to the St FX cheerleaders and to the X football team who led the crowd in cheering and even managed to get a wave going. With the victory, the X-Men go to 3 and 0 against the Capers (and 9 - 0 overall) for the season.
