X heads to Christmas
break with win at UCCB The X-Men survived a wild finish and came away with a 75-73 win vs. UCCB in Sydney tonight. It was a contest that X led most of the way, but was in doubt until the last few seconds of the game. Both teams played an up tempo game, particularly in the first half. X led from the opening minutes and built leads of up to 12 points. UCCB is an explosive offensive team and each time that X was able to get some separation, UCCB went on a run to close the gap. X took a 3 point lead to the locker room at the half 41-38. The second half was more of the same. X led by 5 - 9 points most of the way. However, the bigger leads lasted for only brief periods as UCCB always had an answer offensively, most often from Eric Breland, who finished with 20 points for UCCB. With about 12 minutes to play, UCCB took their only lead of the half, 51-50. The rest of the game was a battle. X generally led, but only a by a few points. With about 2 minutes to play, a Jon Bell steal and layup put X up by 6. However, the Capers scored on their next possession to cut the lead to 4 with 57 seconds to play. On their ensuing possession, X turned the ball over and the home team capitalized to cut the lead to 2 with 44 seconds left. Then, a bit of controversy. Ed Reynolds took a pass on the wing and was clearly pushed from behind and out of bounds by a Caper player. No call. UCCB had the ball and about 30 seconds on the clock. The Capers worked the ball around looking for an open look. X played great perimeter defence. With a few ticks on the clock Ryan Keliher launched a three that hit the back of the rim. Game over. The Blue and White got some strong performances from a number of players. Jon Bell was terrific all night and led the way with 20 points, a team leading 8 rebounds, 4 steals and great defensive energy. It would be fair to say that Bell was the difference for X on this night. Garry Gallimore had a strong outing with tough D on Anthony Breland (6-19 from the field) in addition to 14 points and 8 boards. Mike Baxter continued his strong play in the regular season with 14 points. Ed Reynolds was a force in the paint with 12 points. For the game, X was 6 for 11 from 3 point range. X shot only 43% from the free throw line (7-15 in the second half).
