X Beats UCCB for Invitational Title (Oct 30) In the championship game of the St FX Invitational Tournament, the St FX X-Men defeated the UCCB Capers, 70-67, to take the tournament title. The X-Men got off to a sizzling start and raced to a 10-4 lead in the first 3 minutes. At this point in the half, X went ice cold on offense, shooting 30% (10-33) for the half. Cape Breton played the half with a lot on energy and limited the X-Men to one shot on most possessions. X struggled with its inside game and settled for perimeter shots on many possessions. The Capers took a 35-28 lead to the locker room. The lead could have been larger, but UCCB's Will Fagan was tagged with a technical foul after slapping the backboard after a fast break dunk. The X-Men came out of the locker room for the second half firing on all cylinders. X played with intensity on both ends, particularly on the offensive glass, where they got a number of buckets on offensive put backs. After 6 minutes, X outscored UCCB 26-9 and led by 10, 55-45. X led the rest of the way, but the Capers hung around, mainly because of the outstanding play of Anthony Breland. X could have put the game away in the last 3 minutes but went 2-9 on foul shots down the stretch. The Capers had a chance to tie with a 3 with 5 seconds to play, but were unable to connect. Zach Russell was the offensive star for the X-Men with 21 points (including 5-6 from three point range) and 6 assists. Freshman Tyler Richards played with the confidence of a senior and scored 13 points. The X-Men seemed to click with a Richards/Russell backcourt. Neil MacDonald filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, 9 boards, 3 assists and 3 blocks. Gary Gallimore chipped in 12 points and 6 rebounds. Anthony Breland led the Capers with 21 points. For the game, X shot 40.6% and the Capers 46.4%. X out-rebounded the Capers 38-28. X forced 18 Capers turnovers and committed 15. Box score is below. Tournament All Stars were:
