X crowned AUS champs
For the fifth time in the last six years the St
FX X-Men are the AUS conference champions. The blue and white
defeated a game St. Mary's Huskies by a score of 82-72. This contest
was a character test for the X-Men; one they passed with flying colors.
X jumped out to an early 10 - 2 lead in the
first half. However, the rest of the half was a struggle as X lost
its shooting touch, going 9 for 25 from the field. St. Mary's, led
by Nelson Carvery, played some inspired ball in the half and seemed play
with more intensity than X. For the half, SMU out-rebounded X by a
23 to 12 margin. The X-Men were a little lucky to be only down by 7
at the half, 35-28.
It would be interesting to know what was said
in the X locker at the half, because X came out in the second half firing
on all cylinders. X chipped away and took the lead about 4 1/2
minutes into the half and never relinquished it. This was a great
win for X because they were able to respond positively to some adversity.
They were able to shake off a terrible first half and dominated the
Huskies in the second, outscoring them by a 17 point margin.
Gary Gallimore led the X offence for the
second straight night, scoring 20 points on 7 - 11 shooting, including 4
of 5 from 3 point range. Zach Russell added 18 points, 5 assists and
3 steals. Jon Bell contributed 13 points and 3 steals. A big
story for X was the play of Ed Reynolds, who contributed a 12 point, 13
rebound double double, most of which came in the second half.
Reynolds also played some inspired defense on Jerome Goodman. Jon
Thibault, Jerome Goodman and Nelson Carvery led the way for SMU with 25,
18 and 18 points respectively.
As a conference champion, X is guaranteed a
top 6 seed at the CIS tournament next weekend. Based on their
ranking through the season, X should get a 3 or 4 seed and will play its
first game on Friday. Seeding and the tournament schedule will be
announced soon.
