X-Men get revenge on SMU
Zach Russell led the way for the Blue and White
in an impressive 86-74 win over St. Mary's yesterday in Halifax in front
of 1100 boisterous fans. Russell scored 31 points and dished out 6
assists in 31 minutes, on 8 of 10 shooting (including 6 of 8 three
pointers attempted). Russell was 9 of 10 from the charity stripe.
Prior to the game, it was unclear that Russell would play, having
sustained an injury in practice earlier in the week.
In what was described by observers as an
emotionally charged game, the two teams traded scoring runs throughout the
first half. X got off to a slow start and SMU jumped out to an 8-0 lead.
After a Coach K "T", the team responded with a 6-0
run. At the half, X led by 3, 35-32.
The X-Men came out firing in the second half
with an 11-2 run and were able to build and maintain some separation from
SMU for the remainder of the game. X build leads of up to 16 points
and the Huskies never got closer than 6 points.
In addition to Russell's scoring heroics, X
got solid games from Neil MacDonald (14 points, 12 in second half), Ed
Reynolds with 11 points and 6 boards and Tyler Richards with 10 points and
3 steals. Richards made two threes in the second half to halt SMU
comeback attempts. Alex Stephen was the top rebounder for X with 8 to go with
8 points. Nelson Carvery led the Huskies with 22. Neil
MacDonald did a terrific defensive job on Jerome
Goodman, holding him to 10 points in 34 minutes.
This was a big win for X. As an
inter-division game, it was worth 4 points, pushing the X-Men to first
overall in the AUS with 14 points and a 5-0 record. It also showed
that the team responds when challenged. The Huskies beat X in
exhibition play over the New Year's weekend. The team played the
entire game with emotion and intensity.
