Recap: X vs. Ottawa U
In the final round of
the Jack Donohue Memorial Tournament, the St FX X-Men were defeated by the
Ottawa GeeGees 69-65. X and Ottawa both finished the tournament with
2-1 records, but X claimed the title based on point spread.
In the first half of the
contest, the X-Men played smothering D and led at the half by 11 points.
In the second half, X led much of the way with the GeeGees hanging around.
With 6 minutes to play, the GeeGees took the lead. The teams traded
leads the rest of the way, with Ottawa getting the final edge.
Jon Bell led the way
offensively for the X-Men with 23 points. Gary Gallimore kicked in
12 and Neil MacDonald 11. Bell was named the MVP of the tournament
and MacDonald was named a tournament all star.
The X-Men play next at
the St FX/Pizza Delight Invitational Tournament in Antigonish on Oct 29
and 30. X will host UCCB, Lakehead and UPEI. X will play at
8:30 PM on Friday the 29th vs. Lakehead (featuring former X-Man E.L.
Adams). This game is preceded by UPEI vs. UCCB at 6:30. This
first match up should be interesting. UCCB has had a good recruiting
year and UPEI has another strong club - they beat a top-five caliber team,
Laval, this past week.
