X Defeats Tough Lakehead Squad (Oct 29)

In the first round of the St FX Invitational Tournament, the St FX X-Men defeated Lakehead by a score of 69-59.  This was hard-fought contest that was closer than the final score indicates. 

The X-Men got off to an ice cold start to the game offensively.  After 6 minutes, Lakehead led 10-4.  From this point, the X offence got into maybe second gear for the remainder of the half and took a 31-28 lead to the locker room.  The second half was a battle.  X was able to maintain a 5-6 point lead only through most of the contest.  A turning point  was a steal and dunk by rookie point guard Tyler Richards about 12 minutes into the half that put the X-Men up by 10.  Lakehead did not give up at any point and battled until their final possession. 

Neil MacDonald had a very strong game for the X-Men tallying 17 points and 5 boards.  He took the ball to the hoop aggressively all night and got the foul line 13 times (making 9).  Probably more important to the X-Men were his 3 blocks and numerous shot alterations on defense.  Jon Bell, who scored a bunch of buckets on breakaway fast breaks, also played well with 14 points and 2 steals.  Gary Gallimore kicked in 11 points and played his usual hard-nosed defense on Lakehead's top scorer, Kieran Posey (18 points).  Baxter, Bustin and Richards did a nice job off the bench. 

Lakehead was led offensively by Posey's 18 points.  Former X-Man EL Adams struggled offensively (0-5 from the field), but played terrific defense and harassed  X point guards all night.   Both teams turned the ball over too much (21 TOs each).  X did a great job on the boards out-rebounding Lakehead 32-22.   For the game, the X-Men shot 48% (24-50) but were only 1 for 8 from 3 point range.  Lakehead shot 40%, and were 5-14 on threes.

X will meet the UCCB Capers in Saturday's final at 8:30.  The Capers defeated UPEI 77-66 in the first game of the night.  UPEI and Lakehead will play in the consolation game at 6:30.
