X loses close one at Georgia Reprinted from UGA website ATHENS -- Freshman guard Sundiata Gaines hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to ward off Canada's St. Francis Xavier in Georgia's 69-64 win in exhibition play on Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldogs trailed by three with just over three minutes to play until freshman center Dave Bliss drew a foul as he sunk a hook shot to even the score at 64 with 2:31 left in regulation. The Bulldogs' defense then held the X-Men scoreless, while Gaines went to the line to finish with nine points and a team-high six assists. "One bright spot for us, we finished the game in good fashion," Georgia head coach Dennis Felton said. "We started to impose ourselves on them offensively and then got some good stops defensively. We executed awfully well down the home stretch." Sophomore guard Levi Stukes led the Bulldogs with 20 points, shooting 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and Bliss finished with 13 points. Georgia struggled in the first half, trailing by as many as seven, and clung to a two point lead at the break. "Obviously we are light years away in terms of development," Felton said. "We can't take any element of the game or of our team for granted. We are starting from the beginning, working on some of the most basic things." The Bulldogs built a 10 point advantage to open the second half, but the X-Men battled back and the lead changed six times before Georgia pulled out the win.
