X Falls to Duke in Exhibition Play
It was a game with three distinct sections. The first was not pretty for X. In the first 6 minutes, Duke jumped out to a 23 - 4 lead. The location, opponent and "Cameron Crazies" were clearly a factor. The next section of the game was encouraging for the X-Men. For about the middle 20 to 25 minutes, the X-Men played Duke about even and trailed by 20-25 points. However, in the last 10 minutes of the game, with Ed Reynolds and Neil MacDonald fouled out, Duke post players had their way inside and Duke pushed their advantage to 50 points. Bright spots for X were Gary Gallimore with 12 points and great defense on All America candidate J.J. Redick, (who scored only 13 with Gallimore defending) and Mike Baxter with 12. Tyler Richards was outstanding playing the point and contributed 10 points. For Duke, the story was their post play. Sheldon Williams (32 points) and Shavlik Randolph (22 point) were unstoppable, going a combined 23-26. X had a great turnout of fans, with well over 50 in attendance. Its not often that X supporters have difficulty making themselves heard in enemy territory. However, Cameron is a very notable exception. Duke had a virtual sellout and the Cameron Crazies support their team with passion, volume and humor. They are expert at noticing a visiting teams weaknesses and making noise about it. X players heard well orchestrated insults regarding our country, player height and the lopsided score. To end the game, X was serenaded with the chant "Ski Home Safely....". Strangely entertaining.
