X-Men Take Opener at
Donohue Tourney
The
X-Men won their opening game at the Jack Donohue Memorial Tournament at
Ottawa U over the Concordia Stringers, 100-70. This contest was much
closer than the final score would indicate for a good portion of the game.
The X-Men held only a two-point edge at the break, 38-36. The story
of the first half for the X-Men was turnovers. X committed 17 in the
first half (and 26 overall) vs. only 14 for Concordia for the entire
contest.
In
the second half, the Stingers started strong. 8 minutes into
the half, Concordia led 50-46. At this point, and X shifted
into another gear. Feeding off tough pressure defense, the X-Men
went on a tear, and ended up outscoring Concordia 54-20 in the last 12
minutes of the game. The X-Men out-rebounded the Stingers by about
20 for the contest.
Jon Bell was the
offensive star for the Blue and White. Bell poured in 23 points on 9
of 14 shooting (including 4 of 6 from three-point range).
Sharpshooter Brandon Gorman contributed 13 points, as did Neil MacDonald,
who also scooped up 9 boards. Alex Stephen added 10 points and a game-high
12 boards. All of the X-Men got some PT, and 11 of 12 players
scored.
This victory is Coach K's 599th career win. X plays York Saturday at
6PM and Ottawa U Sunday at 2 in the four team, round robin tourney.
